 TurtleDove Folk Club History
The TurtleDove Folk Club (TFC) was founded in Chester County, PA in January, 1996 at its current home venue, the West Grove Friends Meetinghouse. From its outset, the TFC has a harmonic synthesis of eclectic folk music, community gatherings and an enduring social activism ethos all culminating in "Peace Through Music". In 1997, the TFC earned its official non-profit status by joining the North American Folk Alliance, now based in Memphis, TN. From 1997-2005, the TFC presented 9 consecutive Folk Festivals at both the Brandywine Valley Association in West Chester, PA and the Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square, PA. Notable performers at these festivals include Tom Rush, Patty Larkin, the Nashville Bluegrass Band, Laura Love Nickel Creek, the Holmes Brothers and the Old Blind Dogs.
Over the years the TurtleDove has developed an ongoing musical relationship with our Canadian folk neighbors. Past Canadian performers have included Harry Manx, Lynn Miles, Aengus Finnan, Mad Pudding and Zubot & Dawson. Many past/present/future TurtleDove artists epitomise the social consciousness aspect of the folk canon. Such artists include Hans Theessink, Kate Campbell, Tom Paxton, Sharon Katz & the Peace Train and the Phil Ochs Song Night. The TurtleDove Folk Club has often tranlated its social community focus into direct financial/consultation aid for local worthy non-profits like Historic Kennett Square, the Stroud Water Research Center, the Avon Grove Public Library, the Kennett Square Farmers Market and Sing
Out! Magazine.
